The Benefits of Blogging for Small Businesses
The Benefits of Blogging for Small Businesses | Movable Type Docs
Just a few thoughts on our new blog. We thought this page, see link above, from Movable Type was a useful primer for small business blogs. Or for any small business unit or organisation for that matter.
Movable Type recently moved to Open Source status, you can find their site here – http://www.movabletype.org/
It reflects our thinking about blogs at Thirdsectorweb. They are a useful adjunct to letting clients into the decision making process. They offer our small partnership the chance to create a ‘voice’, which will become distinctive… hopefully.
A customer asked recently why they cannot yet post comments on our blog. We are testing our installations at present. Adding interactivity is a great idea for the web sites we design and create…with security considerations absolutely over-riding all others.
When we know they work we will progressively integrate all the features available.

Glubble – child friendly web
Glubble is a Firefox add-on that offers an interface to a child-friendly web experience. Parents can add Glubble to their Firefox browser and experience dedicated nodes, or islands, of web experience that are collated for presentation by other parents.
You can activate ‘glubbles’ from within the browser, as they become active other relevant linked glubbles also become available.
Your child can access Google, but results are heavily filtered. Parents can create Glubbles for the ‘family wall’ and the wide pre-loaded content includes a Disney section, Dora the Explorer and a glubble about cats amongst many others.
The parent registers and creates a ‘source’ page and additional ones for children. The browser reloads after every user change to prevent children downloading additional material.
A closed world, but a safe one that you can help your children construct.
You can access Glubbles here. Firefox can be download free here.

Plain learning inpictures
If a picture
speaks a thousand….then the simple picture based instructional images on inpictures are a great help in explaining the complexities of OpenOffice and MsOffice.
The display does contain advertising content, but for simple and clear exposition on how to build a database in Access or a presentation in Impress then this is the site for you.
A paid for content site, aimed at US educationalists is also available at Visilearn.
But for a quick ‘how to’ visual reference we thought this did the job really well.

RSS feeds for your desktop with Snackr
For the already initiated, Snackr is an Adobe Airtime application that streams random items from your rss feeds across your desktop. Great work from developer Narciso Jaramillo.
A news ticker for the Web 2.0 age. Click on an interesting news item and the feed opens in a window.
The downloader on this page will also install Adobe Air – stretching the functionality of your laptop.
The film below explains what RSS feeds are if you haven’t discovered them yet. (May require Adobe Flash). The delivery goes at a breathless speed, but for an illustration of what Really Simple Syndication is…very good. We liked it!
For more How to videos check out 5min.com
(To manage our personal rss feeds and news services we use Flock.
Great browser for image searching too. Give Flock a try and see how easy setting up feeds can be…Tim)

New CGI scripts now available
New scripts now available to upload into your Thirdsector domain include…
TraceWatch – Real time web stats and traffic analysis lets you keep track of the visitors to your website.
Another web stats package for our service users.
Typo3 – Content management system for enterprise purposes on the web and in intranets.
Adding to our offer, Typo3 is an ideal candidate for that internal staff zone. We have been working on a template for a client and can now make this flexible and adaptable CMS available to self managing clients.
dotProject – Web-based project management application, designed to provide project layout and control functions.
We have also been looking for a project management package that we can integrate into client builds. We like this one… and you can now add it to your site too.
