Stunning iPhone app demo from Duke

The Duke University Libraries’ Digital Collections in the U.S. have recently published an iPhone app.

Nothing unusual in that today…we were recently reading about an app that mimics drinking beer, but they do have other uses.

This demo is a great example of how mobile technology can really enhance image search or social history enquiry, for example, for any project that  you are working on.

Getting interested…get an app. We know this film is an advert, but we felt it was a very powerful piece of advocacy for the thoughtful use of mobile technology in general.

Calculate how much energy you use…

scalesPicDell have recently published an online service to help you, as a Dell user, to calculate your energy costs online. You can choose to customise your energy profile by type of Dell system, location, currency, kilowatt hour cost and type of usage.

The service also allows you to configure alternative comparison systems to the one you currently use, or are interested in, in order to calculate your energy savings by adopting a new system.

If you are a Dell user this a great way to measure any savings that can be available to you from a system upgrade or replacement.

Whatever manufacturer you use it is still a good way to see the estimated impact for changes in energy consumption and cost that you can make by amending your use profile, or looking at alternative specifications for your infrastructure.

You can also download the Dell Client Energy Calculator methodology paper from the site too.

Drawing online again…

paintBrushimageWe have written about diagram creation and drawing tools that are available to web users before. Highly complex and process heavy applications like Visio serve a purpose for the professional user.

However, there is often a need for a drawings, flowcharts or diagrams of a lighter structure. We like Project Draw 0.7.9 from draw.labs.autodesk.

You can create online all the usual flowcharts and network shapes, but this suite also includes shapes for floor planners, office furniture, electrical items and icons for the Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

We have found it useful for working out wireframes for web design, to planning community library design and installs.

A simple service sign up means you can save your designs and charts in a variety of exportable formats – with the application offering very good properties variance from imperial to metric measurements, grid sizes, object backgrounds and ‘page size’. The ‘draw curve function’ is one we like too – accurate, scaleable and efficient.

This is a great online project draw service – designed by engineers at autodesk.com, but useful to organisations and planners in a while variety of organisations and industry sectors.

Other project draw programs we have featured on Third Sector Tech – Dia, Pencil and you can find Visio from Microsofthere.

See Project Draw from Autodesk//LABS here.
